PBS recently ran a feature on the LDS welfare system calling it “one of the worlds best” and saying that our tradition of non-paid volunteer help is amazing.
They praise not only the Church’s efforts to help the members, but also non-members. They say that even FEMA comes to LDS Church to learn how they do it because the Church is almost always the first to arrive. In cases such as Hurricane Katrina, they were the first to arrive and help.
It highlights a bishop who talks about members who feel that they find value from serving while they receive help from the Church. If members are able, they must work to get what they receive. There are 114 bishops storehouses where members can come to receive help.
