- Find a quiet place to pray
Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
The Lord teaches us that when we say our personal prayers we should find a quiet place free from distractions. The personal area we create to pray to our Father in Heaven can represent the personal relationship that He wants to have with us
- Avoid “vain” repetitions
Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do:for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
The Come Follow Me booklet teaches us that the word “vain” can describe something that has no value. The Lord wants us to pray to him sincerely. He wants to hear how we really feel and what we need.
- Understand our relationship with the Father
Matthew 7:9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
When we understand that our Father in Heaven is the literal Father of our spirits our prayers will become more meaningful. Our Father in Heaven loves us and wants to bless us and help us in our lives. He knows what we stand in need of and is waiting for us to reach out to him.
